The Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium (RDPC) recently delivered the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)-certified course AWR 147- Crisis Management for School-Based Incidents: Partnering Rural Law Enforcement & Local School Systems at the Clay Community Center in Mt. Sterling.
Montgomery County School District Police, Mt. Sterling Police Department, and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office collaborated in sponsoring the free training provided by RDPC. More than 40 participants from areas all across Kentucky, including school personnel, law enforcement, emergency management, and state officials, participated in the training. Three employees from The Center for Rural Development, a strategic partner of RDPC, were also in attendance for the AWR 147 course in Mt. Sterling.
Delivering the course material was Branch Walton, a master instructor for the University of Findlay and Eastern Kentucky University, academic partners of RDPC. Walton has more than 40 years of experience in federal law enforcement, private security, and college teaching. He delivered the course material through a series of slides, video, audio, and pictures that kept participants engaged and interactive.
Crisis Management for School Based Incidents is an awareness-level course for school administrators and emergency responders that educates rural law enforcement personnel as well as school administrators and staff to effectively respond to an emergency involving a school building or an entire school system. The training will provide representatives of rural law enforcement departments with a foundation of knowledge and skills that will enable them to progressively establish a school-based emergency response plan and crisis management team through information sharing and training.
RDPC is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Training and Education Division (NTED), partnership of academic institutions with a vision of creating an environment where rural communities across America will have the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to enhance the safety, security and quality of life for their citizens.
