2015 Doug Reece Memorial Award recipient Lexie Emmert of Monroe County
Rogers Scholars graduate Lexie Emmert of Monroe County is the recipient of the Doug Reece Memorial Award and will receive a $250 college scholarship to any in-state college or university.
Lexie, 16, a student at Monroe County High School, was presented the award at the graduation program for the second and final graduating class of the 2015 Rogers Scholars program.
“Rogers Scholars is truly the experience of a lifetime,” she said. “With all of the new resources I have gained as a Rogers Scholar, I know I will be able to make an impact in whatever I choose to do in life.”
The Doug Reece Memorial Award is given to the Rogers Scholars graduate who has the highest scoring application in the graduating class. The award is presented in memory of the late Doug Reece, former chairman of the executive committee of The Center for Rural Development’s board of directors.
Rogers Scholars Ambassadors
Two other Rogers Scholars graduates Eleanor “Ellie” Tarter of Pulaski County and Cole Schmidt of Adair County were selected by their peers to serve as Rogers Scholars Ambassadors.

Ellie and Cole will continue to work with the program as-needed to plan Scholars-sponsored events, organize community service projects, and coordinate activities for alumni members.
“Rogers Scholars has allowed me to create friendships that will last forever,” said Ellie, a student at Southwestern High School. “It was definitely a week I will never forget.”
Cole, 16, a student at Adair County High School, agrees. “This week has been a wonderful part of my life,” he said. “The Rogers Scholars program is amazing. Words cannot describe this experience.”
Thirty high school students from Southern and Eastern Kentucky graduated from the second class of the Rogers Scholars program on Friday, July 17, at The Center for Rural Development.
