On the 100th anniversary of Titanic’s fateful voyage, Lake Cumberland Performing Arts, in partnership with The Center for Rural Development, presents the nationally touring Broadway production of “Titanic: The Musical” on Saturday, Sept. 22, at The Center in Somerset.
Winner of five Tony Awards—including Best Musical—“Titanic: The Musical” opens the 2012-2013 Center Stage performing arts season and is one of five new shows on this year’s exciting line-up of performances.
The show, set to begin at 7:30 p.m., recounts the dreams, hopes, and aspirations of those aboard the fateful ship. The story of the launching, the maiden voyage, the collision with the iceberg, and the sinking is played out on stage against the backdrop of the rigid class distinctions of the Edwardian Age.
“This contemporary musical presents the story of one of America’s greatest tragedies in a powerfully moving production,” said Dianna Winstead, associate director of arts, culture, and events at The Center. “Featuring a cast of 26 professional actors, a sweeping score, and breathtaking performances in a striking new production, it will truly be a night to remember.”
Pre-Show Event with entertainment and optional catered dinner
Prior to the show’s opening performance, The Center and Clear Channel Lake Cumberland will present a Pre-Show Event from 6-7 p.m. in the front lobby, featuring entertainment by vocalists Dr. Pamela Jensen-Stanley and Dallas Stanley and an optional catered dinner.
Lake Cumberland Performing Arts will join The Center in hosting a reception during the Pre-Show Event for local photographer Charline Marrinan whose exhibit, “Spirit of Nature,” is on display in the visual arts gallery at The Center.
The exhibit, which includes some of Marrinan’s most photographed areas in Pulaski and McCreary counties and on wildflower walks in the Great Smoky Mountains, celebrates the splendor of the great outdoors as seen through her camera lens.
Marrinan has been featured on KET’s “Kentucky Life” series with Dave Shuffet, where she was filmed taking photographs at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. She also has been invited to be a part of the Kentucky Book Fair.
There is no charge to view the “Spirit of Nature” exhibit. Marrinan’s work may be viewed by the public from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and during extended evening and weekend hours when The Center is open for special events.
The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, provides operating support to Lake Cumberland Performing Arts with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
