Rogers Scholar Chase Turner of Morgan County had made up his mind about where he was going to college, but after attending the college exploration session he plans to visit other college campuses in Kentucky before he makes his final decision.
“I had decided I was going somewhere close to home, but after talking to some of the college recruiters, I am definitely keeping my options open,” said Turner, who is planning a career in veterinary science. “I got a lot more things to think about and will probably make some more college visits.”
The first class of the 2012 Rogers Scholars spent part of the day on Tuesday meeting with representatives from some of Kentucky’s top colleges and university at a career exploration fair held in the Exhibit Hall at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset.
Later that evening, Rogers Scholars attended a formal dinner and etiquette training in the front lobby of The Center.
The event was a new experience for Rogers Scholar Yulia Perevozchikova of Rowan County.
“I have always been nervous about eating in public, because I feel like there are way too many forks on the table,” Perevozchikova said after attending the dinner party. “It was really fun. I had to sit up straight for the first time in my life.”
Afterwards, Rogers Scholars took a spin on the dance floor to learn a little ballroom dancing—another first for Perevozchikova who admitted she was a little rusty in her dance skills.
“I never danced in my life except in gym class,” said Perevozchikova, who will be a junior this fall at Rowan County High School. “It was really different and a lot of fun.”
