Members of the Lake Cumberland Decorative Artists are exhibiting some of their favorite pieces of art in a new exhibit at The Center for Rural Development.
The exhibit, presented by Lake Cumberland Performing Arts in partnership with The Center, features 31 original works of art submitted by local and regional artists.
“This community has a diverse group of creative and talented artists, and we are delighted to be able to share their creative spirit in the latest exhibit on display at The Center,” Dianna Winstead, associate director of arts, culture, and events, said. “The exhibit gives these artists a platform to showcase their talents and hopefully will inspire others to develop their creativity.”
Members of Lake Cumberland Decorative Artists meet once a month at West Somerset Fellowship Hall on West KY 80 in Somerset to paint and support each other as artists. The local club, founded in 1999, is a member of the National Society of Tole and Decorative Painters.
Decorative painting is defined “as a diverse art form that uses a variety of techniques and media to decorate functional and non-functional objects.”
Janie Kidd, president of Lake Cumberland Decorative Artists, said the local organization also provides opportunities through monthly classes for members to advance their skills and for new members to develop their talents as decorative artists.
“In the classes, we all learn together and help each other,” Kidd said.
That’s how Louise Hogue of Burnside, who now has her own art studio, and several other members said they learned how to paint.
“I always thought that one day I would be sitting in front of an easel with my paint brushes,” said Hogue, one of the featured artists whose work is on display at The Center.
Hogue is exhibiting her oil painting, “Maine Course,” a dinner place setting for one with an oversized Maine lobster as the main dish.
Other artists participating in the exhibit include: Cheryl Burnett, Jeanette Casada, Carolyn Farmer, Norma Garner, Oreida Haney, Lonnie Hurst, Nancy Kincaid, Janie Kidd, Debbie McQueary, Terry Miller, Janet New, Anna Noland, Juanita Norris, Jan Palmer, Marty Posey, Barbara Schoolcraft, Carol Skaggs, Ruth Ann Thompson, and Amanda Thompson,
A reception to celebrate the work of these artists will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the front lobby of The Center during the pre-show event prior to the Children’s Prime Time Theatre opening performance of “Ananse!…Early in the Day.”
There is no charge to attend the pre-show event or view the exhibit on display through Sept. 25 at The Center, located at 2292 South U.S. 27 (at Traffic Light 15) in Somerset. The exhibit, hanging in the front lobby and along the wall of the South Wing, may be viewed from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and during extended business hours when The Center is open for special events.
